Methodologies of Theological Research: Problems and Perspectives

Respected colleagues, we invite you to take part in the work of a first International Theological Conference “Methodologies of Theological Research: Problems and Perspectives.” The conference will take place 27-28 April 2018 at National Pedagogical Dragomanov University in Kyiv (9, Pyrogova st., Kyiv, Ukraine).

The idea of the conference

The conference is aimed at discussing theological approaches, methods, and research practices in response to the changes in worldview and academic paradigms taking place today in the world as a whole, and Eastern Europe in particular. The goal of the conference is to create a discussion concerning the theoretical and methodological issues that come up in contemporary theological research, and also to establish lines of communication among scholars specializing in the area of theology and related disciplines.

Main themes of the conference

        Methodology of theological research in historical perspective;

        Theological research and the anthropological turn in the European modern thought;

        Characteristic features of classical epistemology and theology;

        Theological methodology in the context of non-classical and post-classical philosophy;

        Theology in the post-modern age: A multiplicity of approaches;

        Hermeneutical, phenomenological, and existential methodological strategies in theology;

        Possibilities and limitations in the use of methods of scholarly-rational knowledge in theological research;

        Interpretation of the relationship between philosophy and theology in the light of contemporary phenomenological research;

        Axiomatic and doctrinal norms of methodology for theology;

        Confessional, scholarly, and secular theologies: The attempt to delineate and analyze the possibilities of non-confessional theological findings;

        Philosophical theology and its meta-theological significance

Papers and publication

Participants in the conference have the opportunity to present a paper. Those who wish to do so must send the Academic Secretary of the conference a summary of its contents (not more than 500 words) in electronic format by 20 March 2018. The organizing committee of the conference will examine and select the summaries and send invitations to the proposed presenters. The complete text of the selected papers must be received by 1 April 2018. In addition to presenters, the participation of listeners is also sought. Presentations will be no more than 30 minutes in length. A thematic issue, consisting of the conference materials, published by the E-AAA journal Theological Reflections. The working languages of the conference are English, Ukrainian and Russian.

Requirements for papers

Papers must correspond to the conference theme, be original, relevant, academically innovative, and propositionally valid.  The text of the paper (up to 12 pages) must be submitted in MS Word, A4, Times New Roman, 12-point (footnotes—10-point), left justified, 2 cm head and foot margins, 2.5 cm left margin, 1.5 cm right margin, page numbers on the lower right. Footnotes are formed according to the menu: insert/footnote/regular and automatic. The title of the paper should be centered on the first page, with the author’s surname and initials, academic degree (without abbreviations), academic title, position, place of work (or study), city and country of residence on the upper right-hand side, and the text beginning one line down. The summary of the paper (500 words) in both Russian and English, 14-point italics, should follow the title, with a list of key words (Russian and English).

Quotations and references should follow the style described for notes and bibliography in Chicago Manual of Style, 16th ed. The transliteration of Cyrillic sources should follow the system of the Library of Congress. Authors should provide brief information about themselves in the language of the paper as well as in English. The organizing committee reserves the right to refuse papers that do not correspond to the established subject matter, academic standard, or stylistic formulation.

Conditions for participation in the conference

To register as a conference participant, the following application must be completed by 20 February 2018. Conference participants (excepting those presenting papers) must pay a registration fee of 200 hryvnias. The fee includes the cost of a registration packet, meals, and coffee breaks. Participants must cover the cost of their own transportation. Participants who do not pay the registration fee may register and participate in the conference as guests (without the services accorded to full participants) Payment of the registration fee may be made on the first day of the conference.

The organizational fee does not cover the cost of accommodation, but the organization committee can assist in reserving places at nearby hotels, if the need is indicated on the registration form. Conference participants from other cities who are presenting papers will be provided with a place in a hotel.
