Accreditation Standards and Procedures

The basic activity of the Association in carrying out the accreditation of its members is guided by the Standards which regulate all aspects of the activity of theological schools and by the procedures which are outlined in the corresponding document: "The Process of Accreditation".

The Standards worked out over the course of several years and subsequent corrections, additions and subtractions having taken into account the criteria and experience of Standards used by the seven accrediting associations existing on other continents. Thus, the EAAA Standards are in line with corresponding generally accepted worldwide standards.

While working on the standards also taken into consideration were socio-cultural obstacles in post-Soviet countries and the European educational traditions, which are accepted in the secular systems of Eurasia.

Thus, the level for standards was not that corresponding with theological schools in these countries, but rather according to pedagogical understanding including specific degrees, titles, their hierarchy, and so forth, in agreement with European and not North American approaches.

Work on the standards took place, and continues to take place, over several stages. Up to the October 1997 General Meeting the Standards for formal educational programs were worked out. Then, prior to the October 1999 meeting Standards for formal-non-formal programs were elaborated. At present work is being done of Standards for completely non-formal programs as well as for Christian schools which are not basically theological seminaries, but teach the humanities, etc., from a Christian worldview.

Work is also continuing on improving those Standards already approved and active. A committee has been appointed to gather remarks and suggestions and are processing them.
